Saying Good Bye to Sadie

A boy & his dog!
"Mom, Sadie's gone" were the words I woke up to at 5:15 this morning as our son stood over me whispering in a shaky voice. He had gotten up for swim practice and his little beagle, Sadie, who sleeps right next to him, had passed away sometime in the night.  I wanted so badly to comfort our son.  He's over six feet tall now and when I reached up to hold him, I had to stand on my tippy toes.  He tried to be brave but I could feel him shaking in my arms.  That broke my heart more than anything.  Oh, if we could just protect our kids from the "bad stuff".  I held him for as long as he would let me.  My neck was wet with his tears.

We had rescued Sadie from the pound several years earlier and had done everything we could to have her be an inside dog.  But she just wouldn't have it!  She would scratch and have accidents and try to dig out, all over the house.  So, she had free reign of the yard.  We brought her inside every night and she slept right next to our son's bed.  She was always kept inside when it was cold or extremely hot or during any kind of bad weather.

Sadie, Harley and Roxi
Sadie was so sweet and happy.  Nothing upset her except when the other dogs would try to eat her food!  All three dogs got along well but she pretty much thought she was the queen.  One time, she and our german shepherd, Harley, got out and went down to the neighborhood pond and went swimming and chasing ducks.  Then they wandered  through the automatic doors at  a Walgreens Pharmacy that was down the hill from our house.  The manager kept them in her office and fed them and let them out to swim in the pond a few more times until we got home from work.

Sadie was a bundle of love and sweetness and never growled or snapped at anyone.  We will miss her greatly.  She was a part of our family.  Don't ever hesitate to get a dog from the pound or shelter.  They are precious and need lots of love and will give it back many times over.

We love you, Sadie!

From His lap,

  8. :(! It'a a hard day when this happens. What a blessing that Miss Sadie was able to peacefully go in the night.

I feel so bad for Morgan. It's OK to be sad right now. You have lost a treasured family member. Be blessed and cheerish your memories of this sweet girl!

  10. So sorry. We've had 3 dogs pass in the last 28 years. Have two rescues and one from the breeder now. It's never easy. I hope you are familiar with the Rainbow Bridge.

  16. Sorry for the loss of Sadie. I know how hard it is to have a family pet pass away. Our pets become one of the "kids" in the house. Part of the family.

My girls have been begging for a dog for a few years now. My hubby and I decided when we move into our next house, with a bigger yard for a dog to run, we will finally agree to getting them one. I'll have to be sure we check the pound or animal shelter first.

    Blessings,
    Rosann

  17. My son asked me to thank everyone for the kind words. I overheard him telling someone that Sadie went peacefully and that he is okay with that. I'm so proud of him.

  18. It broke my heart listening to Sadie's story. My 17 year old niece recently lost her cat Rainbow that she had for 12 years, so I know how you and your son felt. Take comfort in the funny and warm moments (and you seem to have a lot) that Sadie shared with you and your family. Those treasured memories will never leave your hearts.

  19. I read this and felt sad for your family, and especially your son. I had visions of a 6foot guy just needing him mom and felt very happy for the both of you that you had that kind of a bond. Thank you for your lovely post, and my thoughts are with you. You are right, animals do serve such a wonderful purpose and can bring so much to our lives!
