This Is The Air I Breathe

A lot of people ask me why I sign off my blog posts with "From His Lap".  It started some years ago, when our church held a year long 24/7 Prayer Event.  We dedicated a small room in the church for prayer.  The walls where covered in white paper so that you could write prayer requests and praise reports on them, the lights were dimmed and you could play any praise and worship music you liked.  Each person signed up for an hour of prayer any time of the day or night.  Since I wasn't working at the time, I choose countless hours to spend in the prayer room.

As I would sit there in the candle light, listening to worship music and scrawling my prayers on the walls, an amazing thing would happen.  In my heart, I would find myself entering the throne room of heaven, standing before the King.  He would always beckon me to sit on His lap and spend some time with my head on His shoulder.  Now you may think that is crazy, but it was as real to me as my husband standing before me.

During that year of 24/7, I was so aware of God's presence with every breath I took.  It was intense and it filled me with a strength and faith that I would desperately need to get through some tough times, years later.  I have never felt such peace and such communion with God as I did during that year of worship and prayer.

Years later, as I was going through some serious "stuff", I needed to experience that prayer and worship like I had during 24/7.  One of my kids had moved out of the house, so I turned his bedroom into a prayer room (Don't worry, moms!  His bed and furniture are still there if he ever wants to move back home!)  Now, I can go there whenever I want.  I can turn on my worship music and get still and calm.  And before you know it, I'm there in His throne room, where He lets me climb on His lap for love, grace and peace.

For me, that's worship in it's purest form.  And I don't have to be in a church.  There doesn't need to be a live band playing or choir singing.  There doesn't have to be anyone there with me.  And it makes my soul fresh and clean, every time I go there.

I hope you don't think I'm weird or "out there".  This is just my way of getting in my Father's presence and worshiping the One who holds me on His lap.

Turn my music player off (it's in the upper right hand corner) and close your eyes, listen to this song and see if you don't enter the throne room of heaven where you can worship Him as long as you want to.

  1. This is so lovely. I especially like this: "For me, that's worship in it's purest form. And I don't have to be a church. There doesn't need to be a live band playing or choir singing. There doesn't have to be anyone there with me. And it makes my soul fresh and clean, every time I go there."

  2. We sing this sometimes at our church--let me tell you NOTHING brings on prayer like this song-
    I'm... I'm desparate for you
And I'm...I'm lost you without you

so truer words have ever been written! And we forget this many times!
    Thank-you for sharing.

  4. I've always loved this song. And, no, I don't think it's weird you climb into His lap. I think it's the wisest choice we could make. Beautiful.

  5. Awesome post, Erin! I for sure don't think you're "weird." I so agree with you about worship not having to happen in a church, with a band playing, etc., etc. We come together on Sundays for corporate worship... but personal worship happens when it's just me and Jesus.

  8. Oh, I don't think you're weird, crazy, or out there. If you are, than I am too. I go into my prayer closet, literally, and that is where I bow, and sometimes go all the way down into prostrate prayer. I feel His presence so strongly, I feel if I reached out with my hand, I could feel the hem of his garment. I get goosebumps every time! Loved hearing your story, thank for sharing! :)

  10. Hi Erin. Thank you for sharing that. And no...I don't think your weird. I think it's a great thing when you can get completely into the presence of the Lord...however you do that.
So glad you are back because your posts are always uplifting and bless me! Sometimes I just really need to hear what you have to say.

  11. If there's one thing I've learned over my years, it's this: If I show up, He does too. So wonderful you have found your way of showing up to be with Him. He has designed us for that one-on-one relationship, hasn't He. Me, I need it. and find it best at my own piano or in my favorite reading chair in my bedroom. Each place takes me to the cross. at His feet. in His lap. Wherever I need to be...
and if you're weird to need that, too, well....at least you're not alone! :)

Beautiful post. so thrilled to have met you via Paula's link up!

    all for Him,

  12. What a relaxing video! I love nature videos and the way it can calm your thoughts. Love your post because we all need a little space in our homes or offices to just connect with God. It may not be a big room but maybe a little chair in my kitchen works well sometimes. I like to pray and be thankful for all that He has given me - my family, my life, His word.

  14. I love this post, Erin! And I know how it feels to just be in His presence when you are praying so intensely. I have to admit that resentment prevents me from praying at times but when I read this post of yours yesterday, I remembered how good it felt when you know you're drowning in God's presence.

    Blessings to you!

    1. Anne, I'm so glad this post blessed you! Our circumstances try to block us from praying sometimes...bitterness, anger, resentment. But that's exactly where He wants to meet us and deal with those issues. I'm so honored that you stopped by!
      Blessings,

  15. "From His lap" was the first thing I noticed when I visited your blog. It reminded me of my Mom. She has a similar phrase and experience. Through a particularly tough time she spent hours alone with God and told me of how he had beckoned her to his lap. Sometimes if I'm discouraged or worried she'll tell me get in the lap!

  16. Aw, Your mom sounds amazing, Beck. I'm sure she instilled great faith in you. Isn't it great to have Godly parents! Thanks for stopping by!

  17. Oh Erin, I love, love, LOVE this! I'm sighing with joy after reading it. How wonderful that your church put on such an event. I really love the idea of creating my own prayer space here in my home. The thing is, our home is so small, but that doesn't mean I can't have my own prayer area to slip away to. Even if it's just out on our back patio as the sun sets each night. I pray every morning on my couch before the family wakes up, but I don't have a "place" that is sort of like entering His presence. Well, I guess it could be on the couch. I just love the idea of having a separate room to escape into. Thank you so much for sharing this idea. :)

    Love you,
    Rosann

  18. It can be anywhere, Rosann. I know people who have turned a little closet into a prayer closet. It's just a place where it can be you and Him!!! Your couch is the perfect place for you!
    Love you!

  19. Well Erin I kind of think you are "out there". lol But the kind of out there that brings you intimacy with God. I think more people should learn how to get out there. And you sharing your story helps us. I love this post. Thanks
